Urgent email campaign to MSPs

Two new planning applications have been submitted for hyperscale AI data centres, one in Greenock and one in Chapelhall, Airdrie, and neither is being required to do an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). We are asking people to email their MSPs.

This is an urgent situation. Please email your MSPs to request that they ask the Minister for Public Finance make an EIA screening direction for the two data centres to ensure they get an Environmental Impact Assessment and to ask that the Scottish Government put in place measures to require all hyperscale data centres to have an EIA.

THANK YOU!.

For details on why the EIA screenings were so insufficient read the document for Chapelhall and Greenock.

Find out More about the Campaign

We have made a map of the hyperscale data centre projects being planned in Scotland.

Click on the map to find out information on the capacity, stage of planning, developer. And each proposed site has a dedicated webpage with more information including maps and plans, links to planning documents, and contact details of local campaign groups.

What we are asking for

We are asking for a moratorium on hyperscale data centres in Scotland until the Scottish Government examines the impact of them on Scotland’s climate targets, electricity grid and communities. And until there is a robust and meaningful definition of ‘green data centre’ and that all hyperscale data centres are required to do an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

Here is the letter we wrote with Environmental Rights Centre Scotland to the Planning Minister putting the case.

Take Action

We have three urgent actions we are asking people to take – please see below:

Object to Greenock hyperscale data centre

The application has no measure for capacity but we believe it could be 150MW. It has not been required to do an EIA and is on a site designated for 450 homes. Deadline for Objections 16 September

Email your MSP about EIAs

This is an urgent situation. Please email your MSPs and ask them to request that the Minister for Public Finance make an EIA screening direction for the two data centres to ensure they get an EIA.

Object to Chapelhall hyperscale data centre

This is right next to homes in Chapelhall and has not been required to do an Environmental Impact Assessment. Deadline for Objections around 24 September

We are an absolutely tiny charity with three part-time staff, please consider joining us or making a donation to help us continue this campaign!
