Our key asks
The Bill as it stands is nowhere near transformative enough to deal with the huge issues of waste, litter and to create a truly circular economy.
To effectively transform our unsustainable system, it is essential to put responsibility for waste and products at the end of their lives back onto the companies that produce goods and packaging. This would incentivise companies to produce more durable, repairable, reusable, and ultimately recyclable products.
With this in mind we are asking that the Government bring in a lifetime product stewardship approach with companies required to take back products for disposal (eg mattresses, appliances, vapes, clothes). We also want to see support for refillable food and drink containers as an alternative to single use, which would reduce both the amount of raw materials we consume and the litter plaguing our towns, countryside and waterways.
Specifically we are asking:
- That the Scottish Circular Economy strategy will include sections on: product stewardship, takeback, and refillables
- Public bodies, companies and businesses receiving public funds should be able to demonstrate their progress towards circularity
- A definition of the term ‘circular economy’ and a strong purpose section is included in the Bill, which specifically links the Bill to the waste hierarchy
