Ask your MSP to support a stronger Circular Economy Bill

We have been working on the Circular Economy Bill since the Autumn and have suggested many improvements to improve the Bill. We are asking supporters to email their MSP this week to ask them to support measures to improve the Bill when it is debated in Parliament.

Email your MSPs

This form will generate an email which will be sent to your constituency MSP and your regional MSPs.

Please edit it to personalise it as much as possible. For example add an initial paragraph to explain why this is important to you – you can add your own experiences of litter or campaigning on these issues in your local community and the differences that a strong Bill will make to you.

Note: there is an issue with our system not recognising Highland and Island regional MSPs. You can find and email these seperately here.

Our key asks

The Bill as it stands is nowhere near transformative enough to deal with the huge issues of waste, litter and to create a truly circular economy.

To effectively transform our unsustainable system, it is essential to put responsibility for waste and products at the end of their lives back onto the companies that produce goods and packaging. This would incentivise companies to produce more durable, repairable, reusable, and ultimately recyclable products.

With this in mind we are asking that the Government bring in a lifetime product stewardship approach with companies required to take back products for disposal (eg mattresses, appliances, vapes, clothes). We also want to see support for refillable food and drink containers as an alternative to single use, which would reduce both the amount of raw materials we consume and the litter plaguing our towns, countryside and waterways.

Specifically we are asking:
  • That the Scottish Circular Economy strategy will include sections on: product stewardship, takeback, and refillables
  • Public bodies, companies and businesses receiving public funds should be able to demonstrate their progress towards circularity
  • A definition of the term ‘circular economy’ and a strong purpose section is included in the Bill, which specifically links the Bill to the waste hierarchy

We will add this action ahead of the final debate.
