This proposed 1GW (1000MW) data centre development, covering 57 hectares, is planned for land just north of the former Chapelcross nuclear site near Annan, Dumfries and Galloway. It is still in the early stages of pre planning. The developer is CX Power. The developer has stated that a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is being undertaken. “The Proposed Development will comprise data centres, with associated uses including a reception, security and training facilities, power distribution/electrical infrastructure, access, hardstanding, car parking and landscaping. In addition to the key components of the Proposed Development, a series of utilities and services will be required to operate the data centre. It is understood that this will comprise electricity connections to an existing substation in the former Chapelcross Nuclear Power Station Site; water supply/foul water connections with Scottish Water infrastructure; and telecommunications connections to the surrounding area.”

The uncultivated areas at Chapelcross are known to be extremely valuable for biodiversity
having been sympathetically managed since the 1940’s. We understand that these areas now
support some of the best examples of species rich grassland in the region, supporting rarities
such as butterfly orchid and dingy skipper butterfly. Within the footprint boundary for this
consultation, the land around NY21507045 and NY21927054 is likely to be important for nature
and therefore thorough survey and assessment will be required to determine if these areas are
suitable for development or whether they should be more appropriately managed to deliver
positive effects for biodiversity in line with NPF4.
